History of a music video - Miss Georgiou

Create a list of ways in which people can consume music video.
Has this changed over the years?

The ways in which people consume music videos have changed as it is much more accessible than it was a few years ago. Factors which contribute to this, is the development of technology e.g. phones, ipads and tablets, with these devices people are able to go online and search for music videos.
Apps for phones are now available for example Spotify is a music app with allows users to listen to music for free on computers or phones as long as they have wifi. There are premiums for users who would like to pay and listen to music without going online, however this only last for a limited time depending on how much the user would like to pay. Listening to music will make users curious of the music video, which will eventually lead to them searching online.

Social websites have been founded, expanding the accessibility, and video players are now able to be played on portable devices such as phone, at any location people are able to access as long as there is Internet or wifi. Youtube is able to

Research into Goodwin's Theory - Miss Georgiou

In this blog post, I will be defining Andrew Goodwin's theory and select a music video of my choice which I will analyse using Goodwin's Theory.
Goodwin's theory:
1) Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics e.g. stage performances in metal videos, dance routine for girl/boy band.
2) There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either amplifying illustrate, contradicting.
3) There is a relationship between music and visuals.
4) The demands of the record label will include the needs for lots of close ups and of the artist and artist many develop motifs which recur.
5) There is a frequent reference to nation of looking (screens within screens, telescope etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of female body.
6) There is after intertextual references ( to films, TV programmes other music videos etc )
7) Whether the video is primarily performances based narrative based or concept based and how elements of each is in it .

Point- The music video is evident of performance this is shown almost a minute (52 sec) into the music video, the band is on stage almost like playing in a concert. This demonstrates the genres characteristics. The script is a Rockband, their genre music cam be refered to as: alternative rock, pop rock or indie rock.

What is a Music Video - Miss Miller

Music videos have three categories:

Performance:
This includes sing and dancing e.g. performing on a stage or lip syncing at anytime or scene.

Narrative:
Telling audience a story through acting.

Concept:
Selling the audience an idea, theme or ideology.

More than one of the category can be used for example whilst acting in a scene the singer could lip sync showing a combination of performance and narrative.

The purpose of a music video is for the song writer or singer to indirectly inform the audience of the songs narrative or what the song is based on or about.
The music video strengthens the audiences  knowledge about the song, as well as promote the song.

The music video which I have selected is Olly Murs's 'Dance With Me Tonight' which is a pop-swing/jazz genre and it is posted on Youtube. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3EG4olrFjY )Youtube is  accessible by millions of people around the world which the song will then gain popularity from the views and shares from friends or families. This promotes the song to millions of people and will encourage them to buy the CD or album. The main singer- Olly Murs stars in his music video as the main character this promotes the song as people are more likely to want to watch the artist in the music video.

There are two categories which are evident in the music video, the first category is performance.
The is shown in the screen shot as the main singer Olly Murs dances in the centre with backup dancers. The cinematography ( long shot) has been used to empathise the location or surroundings, which is a street this follows the conventions of the music genre: jazz, this is because jazz music videos are stereotypically performed on run down streets or a large spacious area to empathise the energy which the song brings to liven the atmosphere. The mise en scene empathises this with the bright smokey sparklers,  the decorations and the lit up rooms in the background, this represents the liveliness and positive energy which the song brings to the audience, as before the location had been dark and gloomy.

Another convention this music video follows is the costume worn by the main singer, Olly Murs wears smart clothing:suit which is similar to the olden time fashion clothes worn.  The music is catchy and lively with the brass instruments used e.g. trumpets, saxophone.

This screen shot encourages the idea of the music video also being used to tell a narrative because there are jump cuts used from the main singer being happy and singing to him being in jail, this screen shot shows evidence that singer wants to inform the audience to why he is in jail. This is an explanation informing the audience and making them understand the song a bit more.

Olly murs's music is aimed at 13-25 year olds, his music videos attract the audience to the positive energy. For example in the music video Olly Murs is having fun driving around with his firends, singing and dancing. The target audience is nether to young or to old, but are at the age with more freedom and all about enjoying themsleves, this is what Olly Murs does in his music video, which makes it relatable to the audience, to want to experience or have experienced the same events or activities. To ecourage this the cinematography used is hand held camera. (evident in the begining when the main singer walks past his love interest in the music video)
They also consisted a lot of mid or two shots of Olly Murs to keep the target audience interested in the music video.
